Valve has rolled out another parvenue update to Portal 2 that removes the 100MB limit on Workshop file sizes, potentially enabling the creation of much larger and more ambitious mods and levels than were antecedently latent.

Along with ditching the file size limitation, the update makes a few fixes to Portal's authoring tools, including problems with lighting, demo playback, and corrupted text, and makes a smattering of optimizations. There are also 2 new instruction line options for launching benchmarks at respective video quality settings.

It's a comparatively minute update as these things go, but it's noteworthy nonetheless for the simple fact that Portal 2 is forthwith ten eld grey-haired—you don't often see developers descending patches for games of that age. Just for about grounds, Valve has been putt them out beautiful regularly this year, with one in February and two more in March coming before this one. Naturally, that has inspired spots of excited (and, I'm assuming, not-alone-serious) predictions of a Portal 3 announcement in the offing, or perhaps Portal 2: Episode 1, and even One-half-Life 3, because sure, why not?

I don't think that's atrociously likely, but the possibility of bigger and better things out of the Portal 2 Shop (which has already produced some very impressive stuff) is very provocative. The full patch notes are to a lower place.

  • Fixed custom maps with no lights unhealthful lighting for the rest of the play session
  • Fast Model Viewer and Face Stumper non opening
  • Fixed demo playback for workshop maps
  • Fixed some text corruption accompanying UTF-8 conversion in some instances along Linux
  • Sick the 32-bit Linux binaries into linux32
  • Misc. rendering and other optimizations
  • Distant the 100MB workshop level file size of it limit
  • Added a +bench_demo [name] <stats output> command line parameter which will run for a demo, and quit after it is finished.
  • Added a -bench_settings [name] command line parametric quantity to lode a cfg/video_bench_{name}.txt file containing settings to load. There are a set of defaults provided, very_high_4k, very_high, tenor, medium and low.
